Researchers from the project “The Adaptive Mind” (TAM) have already published more than a dozen articles in renowned journals since the beginning of the year. TAM is in the running for a Cluster of Excellence in the prestigious Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.

What is “time” for quantum particles?

Publication by TU Darmstadt researchers in renowned journal “Science Advances”
In an amazing phenomenon of quantum physics known as tunneling, particles appear to move faster than the speed of light. However, physicists from Darmstadt believe that the time it takes for particles to tunnel has been measured incorrectly until now. They propose a new method to stop the speed of quantum particles.

TU Darmstadt and PRIF establish Professorship for Peace Research in Natural Sciences
Professor Malte Göttsche is to take over the newly-created Professorship for Peace Research in Natural Sciences in June 2024. It is being set up jointly by TU Darmstadt and the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) as part of the joint project “Cluster for Natural and Technical Science Arms Control Research” (CNTR), and is initially being funded by the Federal Foreign Office. With the appointment of Malte Göttsche, PRIF and TU Darmstadt are contributing to the strengthening of scientific and technical peace research in Hesse.

Designed to enrich the professional journey of professors, researchers, administrative and technical staff across the alliance, this initiative aims to equip participants with the essential tools and resources necessary for success. The catalogue is the result of the work done by the expert community 6.6: Compile a Unite! annual training programme for staff.

Synthesis of rare nuclei in the Universe

Research team suggests new process
A new nucleosynthesis process denoted the νr-process has been suggested by scientists from GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Technische Universität Darmstadt, and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. It operates when neutron-rich material is exposed to a high flux of neutrinos. The theoretical proposal, which was recently published in “Physical Review Letters”, may be the solution to a long-standing issue related to the production of a group of rare isotopes present in the solar system but whose origin is still poorly understood, the so-called p-nuclei.

The conflicting nature of architecture

New Research Training Group approved
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved funding for the new “Organising architecture” Research Training Group (GRK) involving Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Darmstadt. The GRK will investigate architectures as symptoms and tools of modern institutions, networks and discourses and will receive funding over a period of five years. Co-spokesperson is TU Professor Sybille Frank.

Saving energy with heat-resistant materials

The DFG extends the “MatComComMat” Research Training Group
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has announced that it will fund the “MatComComMat” Research Training Group (GRK), in which TU Darmstadt is participating, for a further four and a half years. The DFG approved a budget of more than four million euros for the second funding period from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2029.

ELLIS researchers involved in "RAI”
ELLIS – the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems – is a pan-European AI network of excellence which focuses on fundamental science, technical innovation and societal impact. Researchers from ELLIS are also involved in the TU project “Reasonable Artificial Intelligence (RAI)”, which has submitted a full application for the Cluster of Excellence funding line as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.

Strong coordination from European Commission needed to advance European Degree, says higher education consortium

ED-AFFICHE, a leading higher education consortium piloting the European Degree, is calling on the European Commission to take a proactive role in coordinating collaboration between all major actors across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to make
ED-AFFICHE is a powerhouse consortium of 51 higher education institutions (HEIs) from six European Universities alliances (Una Europa, 4EU+, CHARM-EU, EC2U, EU-CONEXUS, Unite!). In consultation with higher education ministries, quality assurance agencies, students and employers, the consortium has spent the past year co-developing a vision for the European Degree and identifying concrete steps towards its realisation as an instrument to overcome existing legislative and administrative obstacles to developing transnational joint degrees in Europe. Now, the consortium calls on the European Commission to develop processes to support the continuation and scaling up of the close collaboration initiated under ED-AFFICHE and all European Degree pilot experimentation projects.

Computer science doctoral student Felix Friedrich is involved in the development of a new AI model that focuses on security in addition to free accessibility and multilingualism. Advanced Grant from the European Research Council for Professor Christian Hasse
Professor Christian Hasse from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Darmstadt has been awarded a prestigious Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). His research project A-STEAM is investigating the use of aluminium as an energy carrier and will receive funding of around 2.5 million euros over a period of 5 years.
